The 3 Musketeers is an innovative animated series inspired by Alexandre Dumas’ timeless masterpiece, transforming the classic male protagonists into a dynamic quartet of young heroines. This modern retelling breathes fresh air into one of the most cherished tales in literature, embracing inclusivity and diversity.
In this reimagined universe, the legendary Three Musketeers are reintroduced as powerful female figures. The series consists of 52 episodes, each spanning 13 minutes, and is the result of a collaborative effort between prominent production houses: Palomar (a Mediawan company), Method Animation, France Télévisions, ZDF, and Rai Kids.
After being showcased at MipCom in Cannes in October 2024, with the directorial vision of Stéphane Mit and an enchanting soundtrack composed by Matteo Locasciulli, The 3 Musketeers is poised to capture the imagination of Italian audiences after achieving remarkable success in France.
The four courageous protagonists Charlotte, Olivia, Isa, and Inès use the traditional names D’Artagnan, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis as pseudonyms to acquire new, audacious identities. Together, they form a formidable alliance to challenge the injustices plaguing the kingdom of France, devise clever strategies to dismantle Machiavellian schemes, and confront a variety of formidable adversaries.
This fresh interpretation not only honours Dumas’ original narrative but also serves as a catalyst for discussions about the strength and resilience of women, showcasing their ability to tackle adversity with intellect, bravery, and a touch of humor. The decision to adapt Dumas’ narrative within a female framework is a bold and significant statement. The four young warrior protagonists symbolise a progressive shift where the essence of courage transcends gender.
The series offers a unique platform to encourage young viewers, particularly girls, to reflect on the importance of dismantling cultural stereotypes that historically exclude women from the realms of heroism and valor.
With a focus on strong, multifaceted characters, The 3 Musketeers presents the four girls as remarkable heroines in a world where the thrill of adventure is no longer reserved for male characters. Their journey is not only marked by acts of bravery but also enriched with the suspense of operating under secret identities: in 17th-century France, where societal expectations often confined women, the 3 Musketeers adopt aliases to protect their identities while serving as enigmatic avengers of justice. Dumas himself is woven into the narrative, taking on the role of the charismatic storyteller who chronicles the extraordinary exploits of these young heroines as they navigate the bustling streets of Paris.
With its upcoming debut on Rai Gulp and RaiPlay, The 3 Musketeers is set to introduce a wave of positive energy and transformative change within the landscape of content designed for young audiences. This thrilling narrative, filled with unexpected twists and unbreakable friendships, serves as a powerful reminder that unity is strength—and these young heroines can be as audacious and inspiring as their male counterparts, proving that the spirit of adventure knows no gender.
The first two episodes of the series were previewed at the inauguration of Palomar’s new animation department, inside the Cineteca di Bologna, on February 24th. After The Enchanted Village of Pinocchio, The 3 Musketeers is the second animated series by Palomar supported by the Emilia-Romagna Region through the Emilia-Romagna Film Commission.
