Beginning July 5, Season 2 of City Island, the entertaining hit PBS Kids animated shorts series, will feature a new episode rolling out each Friday.
City Island, from creator Aaron Augenblick and Future Brain Media, is a series of animated shorts for early elementary school-aged children set in a vibrant metropolis, where every object is a character. The city includes local organizations, government institutions, and a diverse range of citizens (like the main character Watt, a lightbulb, and his friend Windy, a kite), highlighting themes such as cooperation, conflict resolution, and urban planning. The series aims to help foster young viewers’ understanding of how cities and communities work.
Season 2, counting 20 new shorts with 585 new characters and over 400 locations, will grow the series’ civics-focused stories to embrace timely topics like news media and fact-based reporting, advertising, and the Web. City Island 2 is part of a PBS Kids’ full slate of civics-themed content, with two new music video series: the spin-off City Island Sings, and Together We Can, created with Sesame Workshop. Music is central to the show, with musician Tunde Adebimpe composing an original score for each new episode. The new season moreover incorporates two special musical episodes, Theater Street and Holidays, written by comedian Rachel Wenitsky (The Tonight Show, SNL, Story Pirates).
The City Island TV series stars Kimia Behpoornia, known for her role in Abbott Elementary, and Kimiko Glenn, who previously appeared in Orange is the New Black. The second season will host several high-profile guest stars, such as Rosie Perez, Ali Stroker, Vanessa Bayer, Julio Torres, and Rachel Bloom.
